After captaining Scotland Under-21s, for whom he has nine caps so far, McGinn has been promoted as a reward for his outstanding domestic form this season. He has been a major catalyst as Hibs have pushed Rangers at the top of the Championship and reached the League Cup final.

Hearts defender Callum Paterson was also poised to be named in the Scotland squad before suffering a shoulder injury.
