It’s been a breathless few days at Hibs and there’s little time for trying to digest it all in the next manager hunt storm.
Nick Montgomery has been sacked as boss after a 4-0 defeat to Aberdeen ended a spell lasting less than a full season. That happened amid the backdrop of club legends Paul Hanlon and Lewis Stevenson preparing to play their final matches at Easter Road against Motherwell.
Then the appointment of Malky Mackay as sporting director was announced, which has proven polarising in the fanbase. A morale-boosting 3-0 win over Motherwell on Wednesday night ensured an emotional day to remember for Hanlon and Stevenson, with their big night ending positively.
Now attentions are turning to who will be appointed as gaffer next, and how Mackay fits into the Hibs project, with Bill Foley’s Black Knights group also on the scene. Here are how 11 pundits reacted to the news coming out of Hibs - with four managerial candidates mentioned.
1. David Wotherspoon (Scottish Football Podcast)
"It's hard to watch sometimes because I feel like there was a few years there where they had a bit of stability and a bit of direction. Whereas when I was there, it was like a revolving door of players. There was just players coming in, players going out, managers coming in, managers going out. There's just not that stability. But it's down to the people that were making the decisions there, I guess." | SNS Group
2. Neil McCann (Sportscene)
"They look in the home dugout tonight, David Gray, He's been interim boss a few times and is a real hero with the Hibs support. The only reason I'm saying that is because Malky Mackay has been brought in as the Director of Football (Sporting Director) and will control everything so I think it would be a smart move. It allows the guy to concentrate on the football. Why not David Gray? Why not give the guy a chance? Particularly because Malky is so experienced upstairs." | SNS Group
3. Andy Walker (Go)
"To be fair to Hibs, they do back their managers with a bit of money and do have a good budget. (Malky Mackay) is in as sporting director and he will have some say in bringing the new manager, new head coach. You would suspect if you are Foley and putting in £5-£6m, you would imagine they have a big say on who's appointed." Photo: Craig Foy - SNS Group
4. Marvin Bartley (Clyde SSB)
"It's been a really difficult one for Nick and he's always said it's a long-term project. I wasn't surprised at all they have decided to part ways and obviously we wish Nick all the best. Now it's time where there has to be an alignment throughout the full football club." | SNS Group
