Cricket club backs Hibs starlet on Manchester City trial - and urges him to be next Andy Goram

Johnson signed a professional deal with Jack Ross’ side last month having been training with the first-team goalkeepers since July last year.

His progress and emergence from the Hibs Academy has caught the eye of European giants Manchester City – but it’s his other sporting background which has prompted comparisons with the Scotland and Rangers legend who also began his goalkeeping career at Easter Road.

‘The Goalie’ famously represented Scotland international sides in both football and cricket – a sporting passion shared by Johnson.

The 16-year-old’s progress between the sticks prompted Goram comparisons from his club-mates at Carlton who sent Johnson a message via their most recent members newsletter.

The cricketers said: "Everyone at Grange Loan will be excited at the news that Carlton junior Murray Johnson has been trialling with Manchester City. He is currently on Hibs’ books.

"Everyone wishes him well and hopes that he will still find time for cricket.

"As a goalkeeper Muzz could be the next Andy Goram who was capped four times by Scotland’s cricket team - he also won 43 caps at football "

Johnson was among seven young Hibs players to sign professional contracts in January, and joined by Josh O’Connor son of ex-Easter Road forward Garry.

Everton are also believed to be keen on the teenage keeper who has been involved in Scotland under-16 and under-17 squads while a pupil at Boroughmuir High.
