Holding out for a hero? That applies to most teams, on most
match days, in any week of the season.
When the Edinburgh Derby comes rolling around, however, the
focus among Hibs fans inevitably falls upon the men likely to deliver the most
telling contribution at just the perfect moment. A goal, an assist, a driving
run that ends with an opponent being sent off, a huge save to protect a 1-0
lead in the 112th minute … this is a fixture made for dramatics.
So, sure, a lot of David Gray’s work over the coming days
will be about getting the basics right. Cutting out the errors that have cost
his team so dearly.
But every gaffer on planet football is reliant on the actions
of their players. Taking a look through the Hibs squad, who are the guys most
likely to emerge as heroes when Hearts come calling on Sunday?
Let’s run through the contenders. And understand that the
game will almost certainly be won by someone NOT on this list …
1. Mykola Kuharevich – Hero Potential 6/10
The big man hasn’t exactly set the Scottish Premiership on fire with his goal scoring exploits. But he’s built for close quarters combat in the heat of a derby. Might just provide that flick-on or knock-down (ball OR opponent) that makes all the difference. | SNS Group
2. Martin Boyle – Hero Potential 7.5/10
He has form when it comes to this fixture. If you had to pick any player to score a double, bag a late equaliser or win it at the death, it would be the experienced wide man. Especially if he’s back to full fitness and sharpness after playing 45 minutes last weekend. | SNS Group
3. Rudi Molotnikov – Hero Potential 6.5/10
You could give the 18-year-old an extra point on this measure, just because a homegrown academy product stepping up to win the derby would be such a great story. The kid has great feet, strength and an ability to unsettle defenders. Don’t be surprised if he makes an impact, even if he gives up his starting position. | SNS Group
4. Dwight Gayle – Hero Potential 7.5/10
Aided by a brilliant Jordan Obita delivery at Tannadice, former Newcastle and Crystal Palace striker Gayle looked to have emerged as the match-winner as he headed the ball past Jack Walton on Saturday. It feels like this game, with all its chaos and craziness, might be made for his predatory instincts. | SNS Group
