The 42-year-old has been lined up as the Blades’ new Under-23 manager, according to The Sun.

The position is vacant since Andy Hughes left the club earlier this month.

Heckingbottom could be a controversial appointment at Bramall Lane having played for rivals Sheffield Wednesday nearly 50 times.

He was Hibs boss until November when he was sacked with the team third bottom with only nine points after 11 games, having played everyone once, while the Easter Road side had been thumped by Celtic in the Betfred Cup semi-final.

Heckingbottom’s time at Hibs started positively as he took the club from the bottom six into European contention but the team struggled at the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

Jack Ross arrived as a replacement and steadied the ship.
