Alan Combe has been appointed the new goalkeeping coach at League One side Cove Rangers.

The 46-year-old was on the staff at Hibs, the club he supported as a boy, for six years before leaving this summer as Craig Samson replaced him at Easter Road.

He takes the job at Cove Rangers after former coach John McCafferty chose to step down due to work and family commitments.

Combe previously worked with manager Paul Hartley at Alloa Athletic before joining the Hearts coaching staff for two years beginning in 2012.

Hartley said of the appointment: “When John informed me he had decided to leave Alan was the first name I thought of. I knew he had just left Hibs and I really enjoyed working with Alan when I was manager of Alloa. I’m delighted to be reunited with him because I know we’ve managed to get our hands on a top class, experienced, goalkeeping coach.”

“Alan will definitely help to get the very best out of our goalkeepers, it’s a great appointment for us.”

Combe played for Cowdenbeath, St Mirren, Dundee United, Bradford City, Kilmarnock and Morton over a 20-year playing career, amassing over 400 league appearances.

He’s most fondly remembered for his time at Rugby Park, where he played consistently for seven years under former Hearts management duo Jim Jefferies and Billy Brown.

He was the opposing goalkeeper when Hibs defeated Kilmarnock and Jefferies 5-1 in the 2007 Scottish League Cup final.
