Former Hibs manager eyed for 'shock' return to ex club as two hurdles remain over possible next move

The former Hibs boss has since managed the likes of Birmingham City and Sunderland.

A former Hibs boss is being eyed for a return to one of his former clubs - on two conditions.

Tony Mowbray made his managerial return at West Brom for a second stint after stepping back from duties with Birmingham City for health reasons. The 62-year-old left the Baggies last year and has not managed since, having initially built his stock at Hibs, with an eye-catching side between 2004-2006. That was a platform to manage West Brom first time around and then Celtic, Middlesbrough, Coventry City, Blackburn Rovers, Sunderland and Birmingham City.

Rovers are looking for a permanent gaffer after Michael O’Neill opted to remain with Northern Ireland after a short-term stint at their helm in the English Championship. Attempts to get ex-West Ham boss Slaven Bilic have proven difficult and now they could turn to the ex-Hibs, Sunderland and Birmingham City man in a surprise move. It’ll depend on Mowbray’s fitness and desire to take the job on.

Who will Blackburn Rovers hire as their new manager?

Transfer journalist Alan Nixon states: “Blackburn’s move to make Slaven Bilic their next boss is hitting a snag over the size of his pay-off - to open the door for a shock Tony Mowbray return. Croatian coach Bilic is wanted by Rovers and is interested in the post after being out of football for a couple of years.

“However Bilic wants a stunning guaranteed payment if the move does not work out, the equivalent of two year’s salary. Former boss Mowbray was originally ruled out but will come back into contention if he is fit and keen on the job. Contact has been made with Mowbray to sound him out as the Bilic talks drag on.”

Blackburn appeared keen to remain with O’Neill beyond the end of the season but he has since signed a new contract to remain Northern Ireland manager. Speaking on the decision, O’Neill said: “Blackburn Rovers is a historic football club with a proud tradition and passionate supporters. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with the players, staff and everyone around the club.

Why did Michael O’Neill leave Blackburn Rovers?

“After careful consideration, I have decided that my long-term focus must remain with Northern Ireland and the journey towards the European Championship campaign ahead. I would like to thank the Owners, Board, staff, players and supporters for the welcome and support shown to me during my time at the club.”

Blackburn Rovers’ Chief Operating Officer, Suhail Shaikh, said: “We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Michael for his contribution, professionalism and commitment during his time with the club.

“Michael’s experience and leadership have been highly valued by everyone at Blackburn Rovers. Whilst we are naturally disappointed that he will not be continuing on a permanent basis, we fully respect his decision to focus on his long-term ambitions with Northern Ireland. On behalf of the Owners, Board, staff and supporters, we wish Michael every success for the future.”
