The decision was made on Wednesday morning, with the 33-year-old confirming that talks had taken place with chief executive Ben Kensell.

Gray took training at East Mains before speaking to the press as part of the build-up to the Hampden showpiece, and stressed that clarity for the players was the crucial factor.

"It's great now that we know exactly what's happening. I think that's important for the players, just to make sure they have got that clarity,” Gray said.

"Our attention as a coaching staff has been on a day at a time, a game at a time, and we weren't looking towards any cup finals.

"But since this morning, having spoken to Ben and whilst they conclude the process of finding another manager, we will be in charge for the cup final. Now the attention changes to that."

Hibs are closing in on the appointment of a permanent successor to Jack Ross ahead of the weekend, with Belgium No.2 Shaun Maloney the preferred candidate to take the reins as head coach and ex-Hibs defender Gary Caldwell touted for the assistant manager role.

Talks are ongoing with the former Celtic and Scotland attacker but an announcement is not expected before Thursday.

Ross was relieved of his duties earlier this month following a 1-0 defeat by Livingston. Gray has been taking the team on an interim basis, supported by Eddie May and Craig Samson, leading the side to a 1-1 draw at St Mirren and Tuesday night’s 1-0 win against Dundee.
