Kevin Nisbet had the chance to put Hibs ahead from the spot after Scott Brown’s foul on Martin Boyle and while Scott Bain saved the striker’s spot-kick, Jamie Murphy was following up and netted the rebound.

Nisbet doubled Hibs’ advantage shortly after when he raced onto a ball from Murphy and slotted the ball across Bain and in off the post.

Celtic looked shell-shocked and Neil Lennon threw on Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths in a bid to get his side back into the game, and it was the Frenchman who netted a fine penalty to pull the Hoops back into the game with 11 minutes remaining.

Celtic kept pouring forwards in the hope of snatching an equaliser and it was Uruguayan internationalist Laxalt, who netted his first goal for the Bhoys with a thunderous effort into the roof of the net in injury time.

Hibs had a half-chance late on through Sean Mackie but the defender scooped his effort just over the bar in one of the last actions of the game.
