What a chance for Hibs!

This time it’s Boyle with the cross. It’s aimed deep at the back post for Irvine to nod back towards Doidge. Having just opened the scoring you’d have expected him to bury another. Instead, he gets his close-range effort all wrong and doesn’t even hit the target.

Doidge has opened the scoring for the hosts.

The delivery from McGinn was terrific but Doidge still had plenty to do, and didn’t he do it very well. The big striker planted a header that left Kelly rooted to the spot. Hibs fans can begin dreaming of Hampden. Their side have been much the better team and are 1-0 up.

Bit of action in the Motherwell penalty area as Hanlon is inches away from connecting on a close-range header before Doidge’s follow-up effort is blocked on the edge of the six-yard box.

The second half is underway. No changes at the break.

Hibs can be happy with their showing in the first 45 minutes. They’ve been the better team both on and off the ball.

The biggest threat has been Boyle. He has ran at the back-line of several occasions and put in a number of good deliveries into the penalty area. Motherwell’s tactic of matching up with Hibs man-for-man certainly isn’t working on that flank and Motherwell boss Graham Alexander may considering altering his shape just to deal with the flying Australian international.

The only downside has been the failure to turn promising opportunities around the final third into clear-cut chances. There definitely needs to be a little bit more composure with the final ball, but mainly the attackers need to be a bit more alert and not get caught on their heels.

At the back the three centre-backs have responded well from a few dodgy clearances in the opening 10 minutes and are now dominating their Motherwell adversaries. Porteous, in particular, is performing well at the heart of the defence.

Snap half-time ratings: Macey 6; McGinn 7, Porteous 7, Hanlon 6; Boyle 8, Newell 6, Gogic 7, Irvine 6, Doig 7; Nisbet 7, Doidge 6.

John Beaton blows the whistle.

Gogic is the first player to go into the book. The combative midfielder took a poor touch when attempting to run with the ball and then lunged into Crawford trying to win it back.

It’s Boyle again down the right-hand side. This time the winger finds his man with Irvine alone in the centre of the penalty area. The Australian has so much space but gets his header all wrong, knocking it miles wide of goal.

Newell clips in a shallow cross for Doidge. The striker does well to adjust himself to get anything on the cross, but can’t direct it towards goal.

Don't think it's a coincidence the two players currently warming up for Motherwell are both left-sided defenders. McGinley has thus far struggled badly to contain Boyle.
