Ross told BBC Sportsound: "I'd have liked to had it [transfer business] done before [today]. It is a notoriously difficult window. Greg coming to work with me on loan is a huge plus. It was something we had been keen to try and do. I had identified him at the beginning of the window.
"The situation with Flo moved very quickly over the last couple of days. When players find out about scenarios and possibilities and have a real strong desire to see them fulfilled it becomes difficult. We had to find a solution to it which would be beneficial to us."
'All-action midfielder'
Ross is excited at having Docherty on board at Easter Road after being impressed by the 23-year-old over the past couple of years, especially when the midfielder was on loan at Shrewsbury Town last campaign, coming up against Ross when he was Sunderland manager.

"The energy Greg brings, the goal threat he can provide, the ability to go box to box. I was fortunate to see Greg first hand when he was with Shrewsbury. He showed that attacking part of his game. He's an all-round midfielder. I know he has that versatility which is an added attraction.
"They bring a real competitiveness to that area of the pitch. We have good players in there but it has just been striking the right balance. We've got a busy schedule ahead of us but now we have real strength in depth in that area.
"I'm excited to start working with Greg. The conversations I've had with him over the past couple of days have been really encouraging."

"We find ourselves in a good position," he said. "Today pretty challenging with the complexities of the deals we were involved in. it was much more challenging for Graeme Mathie and Leeann Dempster than me."
