Hibs confirm 'life-changing' Warren O'Hora Leicester transfer - as international replacement announced

Gray and Mackay hail efforts of Irishman after teaming back up with Martin

Hibs have paid tribute to defender Warren O’Hora after the defender completed a “life-changing” move to Leicester City.

O’Hora has teamed up with his former MK Dons boss Russell Martin, who was at Rangers last season, with the Foxes as he looks to win promotion from England’s League One. The 27-year-old Irish centre-half has penned a three-year deal.

O’Hora joined Hibs two years and made 85 appearances for the Easter Road outfit, becoming an integral part of the squad and a leader within the dressing-room. His contract was due to expire next summer.

Confirming the move, Hibs released in a statement: “Hibernian FC can confirm that Warren O’Hora has joined English League One side, Leicester City, on a permanent transfer. The terms of the transfer will remain undisclosed.

“The Irish defender joined Hibs in summer 2024, and went on to make 85 appearances for the Club, stepping in to captain the side on several occasions and contributing three goals.

“O’Hora was always readily available and popular with the fans for his attitude, application and dedication – he leaves with the best wishes from everyone at Hibernian FC.”

Hibs head coach David Gray made O’Hora captain on occasion and understood the reasons for making a “life-changing” switch to the Midlands.

“Firstly, I would like to thank Warren for everything he has done for Hibernian FC,” said Gray. “He constantly set the standards in training, and he is a true professional both on and off the pitch.

“We’re sad to see him go, but ultimately, we understand that this is a life-changing move for him and his young family. We wish him all the best of luck with the next chapter of his career moving forward.”

Hibs sporting director Malky Mackay added: “Since arriving as a free agent in 2024, it has been fantastic to see Warren go from strength-to-strength here at Hibs, and he has always represented our badge with pride.

“He has been an excellent professional and a perfect example to younger players, showing where talent, hard-work and commitment can get you.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Warren and his family, so once he expressed his desire to pursue the move and return to England – we were not going to stand in his way and began working on a deal that was right for the Football Club and all parties involved.

“We wish him all the best with next steps in his footballing journey and thank him for his contribution here at Hibs. He will always be welcome back at Easter Road.”

Hibs’ replacement for O’Hora

Hibs wasted little time in announcing their replacement for O’Hora on Wednesday morning, with Serbian centre-half Marko Ivezić joining from German side Holstein Keil.

The 24-year-old has experience of playing in the Bundesliga and has represented his country at senior level.

“We’re delighted to bring Marko into the building and get the deal over the line,” said Gray.

“He brings a really good combination of both physical defensive qualities and experience – having played in the Bundesliga and represented his country once in 2023 against USA.

“He’s very versatile, which gives us another option within the squad, and at 24, he is at an age where he has his best years ahead of him and we believe he is primed and ready to fit right into the squad.”

Ivezić could make his Hibs debut in Thursday’s Edinburgh derby against Hearts at Easter Road.
