The 25-year-old will also undergo a medical at the club’s training ground before finalising the transfer and is expected to put pen to paper on a three-year deal.

There had been interest in the player from other clubs on the continent including Austrian outfit Rapid Vienna and Bochum in Germany, but Kamberi has elected to return to Switzerland where he began his senior career with Grasshoppers in 2014.

St Gallen have already been active in the transfer window this week, with Basel-born forward Cedric Itten joining Rangers on a four-year deal.

It is understood that Itten’s departure opened the door for the Swiss Super League runners-up to bring in Kamberi as his replacement.

The former Swiss Under-21 cap returned to pre-season training with Hibs after a loan spell with Rangers in the second half of last season but Easter Road head coach Jack Ross indicated the striker was not part of his plans for the 2020/21 season and didn’t include him in any pre-season matches.

Kamberi had drawn criticism from some Hibs fans for remarks he made after making the temporary switch to Ibrox, describing it as his “dream move” despite having more than a year left on his contract with the Capital club.
