Chris Sutton believes that young Hibs striker Jamie Gullan would have opened the scoring against Alloa in their Betfred Cup quarter-final had he not “thought of diving”.

The 21-year-old burst through on goal after a sublime Ryan Porteous pass in the first half and while he went round Wasps goalkeeper Neil Parry, he seemed to stumble and the chance was gone.

Replays proved inconclusive as to whether Parry clipped him, but Premier Sport pundit Sutton felt Gullan was too preoccupied about going down under minimal contact.

"He should score,” said Sutton.

“I think the issue here is that he’s thinking of diving.

"By the time he’s thought of diving and doesn’t go down, the chance has actually gone.

"Had he not thought about diving, he would have rolled it into an empty net.

“I don’t understand what he is thinking. He’s right to go round the keeper, but it’s an alarming miss.”
