Hibs have been dealt in a blow regarding a possible return for Jason Naismith.

The Peterborough United defender spent last season on loan at Easter Road where he impressed with a number of rampaging displays at right-back.

His progress, however, was curtailed by a season-ending injury in a Scottish Cup clash with Dundee United in January.

Peterborough’s director of football Barry Fry has revealed the player is keen to fight for his place at the League One side.

Naismith has one year left on his contract with the English club.

“Jason has also stated he wants to have a go with us so Darren [Ferguson] has invited him to training when it starts again,” Fry told the Evening News’ sister title the Peterborough Telegraph.

“It won’t be easy for Jason as we have two right-sided defenders [Niall Mason and Nathan Thompson] who did well last season, but he’s a good pro who insists he is close to full fitness again.

“Until the injury I would have put good money on Hibs signing him, but they paid decent money for a right-back [referring to Paul McGinn] after Jason picked up his injury.”

Naismith, who made 14 appearances, scoring one goal, has previously spoken of his admiration for the Easter Road club and admitted a desire to return.

“Hibs are a massive club,” he said.” When I signed it was the first time I felt like I was a proper footballer.

“No disrespect to Peterborough but I won a watch getting a loan deal from there to Hibs. I love playing for the club and was set on going there at the end of the season.

“But this pandemic might change things, in terms of finances and whether the club will be able to do anything.

“I always had it in my mind that I might need to go back to Peterborough. I never got ahead of myself or put all my eggs in one basket.

“The manager, Darren Ferguson, has texted me and we’ve patched things up so it wouldn’t be a problem.”
