Hibs recruit shares agent's transfer message that took him by surprise as Leith move sparks excitement

The star has joined Hibs from Millwall as part of the Easter Road side’s summer transfer shopping.

Adam Mayor insists the opportunity to play European football and in front of big crowds was a major attraction behind his Hibs transfer.

The left-wing-back joins the Premiership side on a permanent transfer from English Championship club Millwall. Aged 21, Mayor broke through at Morecambe before being snapped up by the Den outfit, since gaining senior experience on loan to Bromley and Cambridge United. He joins for an undisclosed fee ahead of Conference League second round qualifiers against either KF Malisheva or Vilaznia beginning next Thursday.

A call put in by Hibs to his agent took him by surprise but the attraction soon became obvious for Mayor. Talks with head coach David Gray and sporting director Malky Mackay then fully sold him on the switch after family members helped make aware of the club’s stature.

Why has Adam Mayor joined Hibs?

He said: "It sort of came out of nowhere. My agent rang me and said he's had an interesting call with Hibs. Obviously as soon as he said that, and how big the club is and the history, straight away it gave me something to think about. I think it's just the different opportunities. Obviously you're playing in front of big crowds here at home and then you've got the likes of Celtic, Rangers as well but not only that, you're going and pushing to play in Europe every season.

“I think it's just it's a different challenge and a lot bigger opportunities as well. I don't know much to be honest about Scottish football but I know how big the club is. As soon as I heard about the interest I told my family. They're big football fans so they know a lot about the club as well so straight away it's putting good things into my head and it makes you want to go to the club.

”When I first heard about the interest I spoke a little bit to them. I had a little call, they sent over a few videos of the plan for the team and how he wants to play, and straight away I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. It suits my game as well, playing with wing-backs, because that's a big part of my game. It’s running so I can get up and down. As soon as I heard about the plans the team and learned a little bit more about the club it was straight away something I wanted to be a part of.”

Why has Adam Mayor left Millwall

Injuries hampered what Mayor was able to achieve with Millwall and he insists now is the perfect chance to reboot his career with a permanent move to Hibs. He added on club media: “I signed for Millwall about three years ago. I had quite a bad injury when I first went there so I was out for a little bit and then ended up going out on loan. I went on loan to Bromley for the second half of the season and done quite well there in getting back playing from my injury.

“Then the season after, which was last season, I went to Cambridge on loan. Really enjoyed it, really good club, had a good season and we got promoted. Obviously off the back of a promotion it gives you a lot of confidence coming into this season to go and push yourself even more. I like to create chances. I think no matter what you always get 100% from me. I work for the team and as you said just like to try and score and create goals. This is probably the most important time in my career to go and push myself and really get going properly now. I think I've picked the right club where I can go and push on and challenge myself.”
