The 23-year-old midfielder, who has been the subject of two failed bids by Rangers, handed in a written transfer request on Tuesday, with the club issuing a statement reiterating its stance that the former Dundee United starlet was not for sale.

A torrent of abuse was sent to the ex-West Brom midfielder, who has recently become a father.

Although a number of tweets have been deleted, one fan posted: “Stab Scott Allan’ while another called him a ‘diabetic c***’.

One user tweeted the player, calling him a ‘dirty little judas c**’.

A number of the Hibs first-team squad took to Twitter to blast the abuse, with defender Jordon Forster tweeting: “I can understand frustration but some of this is just disgusting!” while former Hibs striker Ross Caldwell added: “Wow, seeing some of the abuse aimed towards Scott Allan is sickening, wishing death or illness on him is many steps to far. Embarrassing.”

And Hibs have today called on fans to be respectful on social media.
