How the Hibs players rated in 1-0 defeat by Rangers: Porteous blots his copybook
Did he look happy? Certainly not. The centre-back always seems to be at the centre of controversy against Rangers and this was no different.
Just a few minutes after a superb block to deny Ryan Kent, the faintest of contact on the same player five minutes later proved costly. It was a soft one, but the challenge gave the referee a decision to make. Kemar Roofe dispatched the resultant penalty and that was it.
Up until that decisive moment, Porteous was outstanding, not giving Alfredo Morelos an inch. But in a flash all of his good work undone.
Overall, Hibs will be frustrated to have lost a match that they controlled for long spells.
They stay sixth in the table despite the defeat, but have now lost six of their last seven league matches.
After the team’s Hampden heroics 11 days earlier, when Martin Boyle’s hat-trick dumped Rangers out of the Premier Sports Cup semi-final, Jack Ross adopted an “ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach in terms of team selection and tactics.
The head coach played exactly the same XI and set them up in the same 5-3-2/3-5-2 shape that worked so successfully in the cup semi-final.
It worked well enough. It was just the result that went wrong and ultimately the outcome all boiled down to one moment. Fine margins indeed.
So how did the players rate out of ten?

5. Chris Cadden - 7
Put in a shift again. Boundless energy down the right flank and linked up well with Boyle and Nisbet. Should have done better with his chance though Photo: Craig Williamson - SNS Group

6. Jakes Doyle-Hayes - 8
Booked for a late challenge on the half hour. Terrific thereafter. Buzzed around in the middle of the park and always wanted the ball. Confident in possession too. Photo: Craig Foy - SNS Group

7. Joe Newell - 7
Full of energy. Snapped into tackles. Tidy on the ball and disciplined. Very good Photo: Craig Williamson - SNS Group

8. Josh Campbell - 7
Hasn't looked back since starting against Rangers in the semi-final at Hampden. Another composed display in midfield. Getting better with every game and starting to look like he belongs. Photo: Craig Williamson - SNS Group
