'It's schoolboy stuff' - Pundits lambast Hibs defender Ryan Porteous for role in Rangers goal

Sky Sports pundits Kris Boyd and James McFadden didn't mince their words after Rangers' 1-0 win against Hibs at Easter Road on Wednesday night when reviewing the visitors’ goal.

Ryan Porteous, who had been involved in an incident in the first half with Alfredo Morelos, was given the slip by the Colombian who scored what turned out to be the winner early in the second period.

Discussing the build-up to the goal after the match, Boyd eviscerated Porteous for “switching off”.

He said: “I'm sick of hearing about how great a defender he is - Ryan Porteous cost Hibs tonight, switching off at the goal.

"It's all well and good flying into tackles, ruffling people up, but he has cost Hibs a point tonight.

"He has switched off, and from that area... just go and defend the ball. Just stay with your man. Morelos is going towards the middle of the goal, and [Porteous] just leaves him.

"It's schoolboy defending!”

Former Scotland striker McFadden was more reserved, adding: “He's young, and he is good at certain things. In the initial play before the goal he does well; he forces Morelos out wide but then he lets him go.

"He has to be aware of the danger; the danger being Morelos running straight through the middle. He has to be aware of it.

"He has all the attributes but he has to be switched on. Look at Filip Helander for Rangers: he’s not the quickest but he's switched on, he knows where he has to be, and the communication between the defenders is good.

"That was the difference between the two teams tonight.”
