Jack Ross shares his views on Kevin Nisbet and his striker's possible Scotland debut against Faroe Islands

Hibs boss Jack Ross is keeping his fingers crossed that top striker Kevin Nisbet is given the opportunity to prove his worth to Scotland when the national side play the Faroe Islands at Hampden this evening.

The third game in a World Cup qualifier triple header, the Easter Road goalgetter has been no more than an interested observer as Steve Clarke’s side delivered back to back draws, against Austria and then Israel, but his club manager is hoping that will change when they host the Group F minnows tonight.

“Selfishly, I would like to see Kevin get on the pitch against the Faroes at some point and, hopefully, the type of game it might be could help him with that,” said Ross. “But, we will have to wait to see.”

It would mark a meteoric rise through the ranks. The 24-year-old only established himself as a Premiership player this season, after signing for Hibs last summer. Since then, he has been the subject of interest from English clubs and has scored 14 goals in all competitions to earn him his call-up to Clarke’s squad, along with fellow newcomer and forward Che Adams, who featured against Austria and started against Israel.

“If he does play then that will be another brilliant step forward for him,” said his club gaffer. “Being in the squad for the first time is one thing but getting that first cap would be huge.

“I have not spoken to Steve since before the squad was announced but I will speak to him in the aftermath about how Kevin was within the group and how he did.

“It would be great if he decides to give him some game time. I have spoken to Kevin a couple of times via messaging and he says he is OK and enjoying it.

“As a club, we have had this progression this season and have seen so many players in international squads, but after getting that call up you want to see them earning caps. That reflects well on the club but, obviously, also on the players themselves. It is a huge step and a huge honour and it usually helps them grow in stature and confidence and belief because it is not insignificant to be chosen to play for your country.”
