The Gers have been rampant since the 2-2 draw at Easter Road in September, winning all 11 league matches since, but the Capital club have also been on a decent run, losing just two Scottish Premiership fixtures since they last faced Steven Gerrard’s team.

The former Rotherham man has been a key player in Jack Ross' side and the midfielder is keen for Hibs to maintain their festive form.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the game Newell said: “We have to be resolute, and continue to do what we've done the last few weeks.

"You have to be defensively strong here and do the business going forward as well.

"We caused them problems at Easter Road; it was a good game for both teams and I think we can take confidence from that. Last season we had two contrasting results here so we know it's a tough place to come.

"Rangers are in really good form and so we’ll have to be at our best."

Newell is out of contract in the summer but talks over a new contract are under way. One thing is clear, however: the club and the supporters are keen for the 27-year-old to extend his stay in the Capital.

Newell continued: “The team is having a good year and I’m enjoying it myself. I enjoy playing in the there and the gaffer has had lots of faith in me.

"Im happy to just keep on doing what I’m doing.”
