Chris Maxwell 'has played last game for Hibs' as on-loan Preston goalkeeper eyes first-team football

Jack Ross has revealed that Chris Maxwell’s days at Easter Road are numbered with the goalkeeper unwilling to settle for a seat on the bench.

Maxwell joined Hibs on a season-long loan from Preston North End, signed by Ross’s predecessor Paul Heckingbottom to compete for the gloves with Israeli internationalist Ofir Marciano.

Initially he was restricted to appearances in the Betfred Cup but was handed a shock Premiership debut in the first Edinburgh derby of the season at the end of September and kept his place in goal for the next 12 matches.

But Marciano became first pick again at the beginning of December and with Adam Bogdan, the Hungarian internationalist who had spent last season on loan at Hibs

from Liverpool, returning to the club on a short- term contract, Maxwell found himself not even making the matchday squad.

While Bogdan joined Hibs on the Costa del Sol for this week’s training camp, Maxwell wasn’t in the travelling party and now looks to have played his last game for the club.

Ross explained: “In terms of goalkeepers we are in an unusual situation in that at the end of last month we had three senior goalkeepers who all want to be first choice.

“Chris has intimated that, having found himself out of the team, that he’d prefer to go and play regular first-team football. So the clubs are in the process of trying to find something that will suit him. And that would hopefully leave us with a situation where we would have Adam in along with Ofir until the end of the season.

“It’s slightly unusual in that it’s not quite settled yet but hopefully that will be the case.”
