Hibs head coach Jack Ross has played down speculation linking him with a move for Sunderland goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin.

The 32-year-old spent a season at Hearts during the 2017/18 campaign and impressed between the sticks, his form earning him a call-up and debut for the Scotland national team as well as prompting Ross to sign him for Sunderland.

The former Burton Albion and Bradford shot-stopper's contract expires in the summer and was one of a handful of Black Cats players linked with a move north of the Border this month.

However, Ross has revealed there is "nothing in it", telling the Evening News: "Jon was brilliant for me as a person and a player.

"His contract is obviously up at the end of the season, but I think he has done well enough to ensure he'll not be short of offers."

McLaughlin, who played 36 times for Hearts during his stint in the Capital, told the Sunderland Echo that things had "gone very quiet" regarding the offer of a new deal at the Stadium of Light.

“From my side, we have no idea [where the contract talks are at] and we have no control over that,” McLaughlin said.

“At the start of the summer it looked very positive. It looked like they really wanted to get something done but it’s gone very quiet very quickly.”
