Michael Weir: Hibs will need their full squad to achieve success this season

It was good to see the squad getting utilised in the Betfred Cup win over Brora Rangers.

We were in cruise control at 2-0 but to be fair to Brora they upped their game, got about Hibs and made it difficult for them.

In the end the Highland League side put on a good show, but the main thing for us was getting players' games because they're all going to be needed.

The opposition was maybe not the strongest, but the key thing in these games is getting your squad players 90 minutes because they are all going to be used throughout the season.

Competition is always key at a big club so I think they all need to be used at a certain part of the season, and Stevie Mallan is certainly one of those.

He's certainly done himself no harm getting two goals on Wednesday night but we all know he's got goals in him. He's got good quality at times – it's just fitting him into the team.

When the team is doing well it's more difficult to get in, so he's just got to be ready to take his chance like every other player in the squad.

There will be times when he and others are called upon because to try to win games week in, week out with the same 11 is not easy.

I've said it before, but we're asking young players to do a lot week in week out, so we definitely need the full squad to boost that.
