Player exits Hibs after Charlton Athletic recall as David Gray shares why decision is correct outcome

The defender joined in the summer transfer window from Charlton Athletic.

Zach Mitchell has returned to Charlton Athletic after being recalled from his loan at Hibs.

The centre-back impressed at Premiership level with St Johnstone last season and moved to Easter Road on a season-long loan in the summer transfer window. He has featured twice for head coach David Gray, who also has Rocky Bushiri, Grant Hanley, Warren O’Hora and Jack Iredale as natural centre-back options.

Seeking more regular game time, English Championship side Charlton have opted to bring him back to the Valley with a recall, amid the January transfer window. Gray admits a decision that makes sense as he praised Mitchell’s professionalism.

Why has Zach Mitchell left Hibs?

Speaking on the Addicks talent, Gray said: “I’d like to thank Zach for the way he has conducted himself around the Club and for all his hard work. We’ve had a lot of competition for places in his position, and he had to be patient for his opportunities.

“Zach is a young player who wants to play games, which we completely understand, so it makes sense for him to return to Charlton Athletic as it’s not something we can guarantee. He was a model professional during his time here, fantastic to work with, always keen to learn, and I wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”

A Hibs statement reads: “We can confirm that Zach Mitchell has today been recalled by Charlton Athletic. The 21-year-old defender joined Hibernian FC in September 2025 on loan and went on to make two appearances for the Club. Everyone at Hibs wishes Zach all the best for the future and thanks him for his contribution.”

Zach Mitchell on playing for Hibs

Speaking after featuring against Dundee United at Tannadice last month, the central defender said: “I've had to be patient but the staff have been brilliant and the experience there has properly helped me through that game. I'm grateful for the opportunity. It’s difficult as a player. You always want to be playing and getting game time.

“But I've been learning in other ways, away from the pitch, on the training ground. Like I said, the staff and other players have been brilliant with me so I’m grateful for the opportunity today. Hopefully I can keep going. I think having that sense of familiarity with the league, with certain teams from last season always helps. But it's a different culture, different team and with that you have to learn and adapt.

“It's a great club and a great set of lads. We’ll keep moving forward together and I look forward to the next one. As a player, you need to be ready at any moment. It can be hard maybe to not build up the moment too much. That’s something you have to control in yourself. It’s important not to get too high in certain moments and obviously not too low as well.”
