The 29-year-old scored ten goals and laid on 11 more for his team-mates last season and there were high hopes that he could continue that form into the current campaign, but he has been sidelined for more than three months with an unspecified health issue, missing 14 games and registering just one assist in the opening day victory against Kilmarnock.

Allan, who has type 1 diabetes, hasn’t featured in a matchday squad since a 54-minute outing in the 1-0 home defeat by Aberdeen on August 30 but has still been very much involved on a day-to-day basis.

As well as helping with training at East Mains he has also been used as a makeshift scout, with Jack Ross hailing his “invaluable” contribution off the park in the run-up to the Scottish Cup semi-final against city rivals Hearts.

However, while Easter Road fans may be eagerly anticipating a swift return to action, the Evening News understands the playmaker only took part in light training, and is being assessed on an ongoing basis.

Allan’s midfield colleague Kyle Magennis has also resumed training but isn’t expected to be fully involved until Monday, ruling him out of Saturday's trip to North Lanarkshire.

One player who will almost certainly be included in the squad is long-serving left-back Lewis Stevenson. The 32-year-old has been out since October with an ankle injury sustained in the 1-0 win at Kilmarnock but should travel with the team to Fir Park.
