'Some frailties remain': Journalists' predictions for St Mirren v Hibs

Partick McPartlin: An intriguing tie awaits in Paisley with Jack Ross returning to his former employers in his first away game in charge of Hibs and Jim Goodwin facing the man he has twice replaced as manager. Like the Capital side, the Buddies recorded a come-from-behind win on Saturday - and their league form at the Simple Digital Arena this season is pretty impressive, with Rangers' 1-0 win in late August their only defeat in front of a home crowd. Hibs have struggled before in Paisley and could do so again. The victories against St Johnstone and Motherwell were much-needed and there were obvious signs of improvements in individuals and as a team. But some frailties remain, and the Saints will hope to take advantage where they can. With just four points separating the bottom seven teams in the Ladbrokes Premiership, this match could be seen as the proverbial six-pointer. A win for Hibs would take them to within three points of fifth-placed Motherwell and further away from Ross County, and you'd have to imagine Ross will be only too aware of the importance of picking up the win. Prediction: Hard-fought Hibs win

Mark Atkinson: St Mirren are an obdurate bunch. They have a good goalkeeper in Vaclav Hladky and Gary MacKenzie marshals their defence well. Their problem is scoring goals against decent teams, so Hibs should be looking to take at least a point from this. Scott Allan will be the key here - he's able to unlock most defences in this league and, with that in mind, Hibs will get enough chances to keep up the momentum and give Jack Ross another fine result so early in his tenure. Prediction: St Mirren 0-1 Hibs.

Anthony Brown: On the back of two consecutive impressive victories, Hibs should be capable of continuing their mini-resurgence against one of the most limited sides in the league in Paisley. With Allan, Christian Doidge and Florian Kamberi all finding their form and Martin Boyle returning to the mix, they suddenly look equipped to cause some damage. Prediction: St Mirren 0 Hibs 3

Neil McGlade: Hibs have looked a different breed in their last couple of fixtures - two wins, seven goals and, most crucially, six points. The club are now looking up the table rather than what’s lagging behind them. Another victory tonight would move them to within three points of fifth-placed Kilmarnock and just seven points off the pace of Aberdeen in third. Suddenly, there is some optimism the club can turn its season around. Saints won’t make it easy and will be desperate to get one over their former manager. I think it will be tight but Hibs should get the job done. Prediction: St Mirren 1-2 Hibs.

Craig Fowler: I was impressed from what I saw of Hibs on Saturday. It certainly wasn't true that Motherwell dominated the match - as their social media team tried to claim - as Hibs routinely threatened in the final third with a number of players getting forward to support the front two of Doidge and Kamberi. With every member of the midfield willing to get forward and the full-backs pushing high to compensate for the lack of width in the team's diamond-midfield set-up, I still felt they left themselves a little exposed at times, especially on the flanks. Just as well, then, that they're playing the least threatening attack in the league. St Mirren have scored four goals in their last two games, so things are picking up, but having watched their match against Ross County there still isn't all that much quality in the final third. If Ryan Porteous can handle the physical threat of Jonathan Obika then Hibs should be fine. Prediction: Away win

Joel Sked: Another game straight off the back of Saturday's win is exactly what Hibs fans will be wanting. Whether that is the case with Jack Ross, who knows. But the arrival of a new manager and a strong showing against Motherwell - some may say dominant showing - will have increased confidence among the support, and likely the players. Three points and the Easter Road side are right back in the hunt for not just getting into the top four but a push for third and a definite European place. A trip to Paisley is an early test for Ross and whether there is greater steel about the Hibs side early on. St Mirren are an unusual side and will be hard to beat despite their lowly standing. Prediction: Draw
