Star Hibs sold for seven figures 'coming to an end' at latest club as move worth millions mooted

The defender has been struggling for minutes in the north of Italy

Former Hibs left back Josh Doig’s spell at Serie A side Sassuolo could be ‘coming to an end’ with a potential seven-figure move in the offing.

After coming through the youth ranks, the 24-year old enjoyed two successful seasons at Easter Road which earned him a move to Hellas Verona for seven figures. He was then signed by Sassuolo, where he remains to this day. However, a recent frustrating spell for the Scotsman could see him headed for the exit door.

Almost a year since the highs of his first ever Scotland cap, Doig has been muscled out of the Sassuolo starting XI - hindering his chances of a World Cup call-up from Steve Clarke. Despite him falling out of favour with World Cup winner and Sassuolo boss Fabio Grosso, second tier side Venezia are reportedly interested.

Doig’s Sassuolo career ‘coming to an end’

According to TuttoMercado: “No top-tier club has made inquiries in recent months. The only one—and the latest—has been Venezia, who have already attempted to offer between €4 and €5 million for him next season. It's not impossible. Because after starting the season as a regular, he lost his place in mid-February, when Ulysses Garcia arrived from Olympique Marseille. The feeling is that his time in Emilia is coming to an end.”

Since Garcia’s arrival, Doig has only started twice for the Neroverdi, compared to his 14 in the first half of the season. With one game to go of the league campaign, Sassuolo currently sit in 11th place. On the final day this weekend, they will face Parma away, in what could be Doig’s last dance.

How has Doig fared since moving to Italy?

It was clear from his early years in Leith that the Doig had potential. After originally playing in the centre of the defence, he made the transition to left back during a loan spell at Queen’s Park. After an impressive debut season at Easter Road, he won the SFWA Young Player of the Year award.

His move to Hellas Verona - the same club where Hibs sold striker Kieron Bowie to - was in the region of £3m. Hibs also caught a hefty windfall of around £500k from his sell on fee after he moved to Sassuolo. After two successful seasons with Hellas he made the switch to Sassuolo, but was instantly relegated, while his old side stayed up.

However, it hasn’t all be doom and gloom for Doig at his current side, as they gained promotion back to the top flight at the first time of asking. Since then he was rewarded his first and only Scotland cap in a friendly against Liechtenstein in June 2025.
