The Staggies ace is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with both Hibs and Aberdeen this season.

Stewart has caught the attention of admirers for a raft of impressive performances for County since being promoted back to the Premiership.

The 24-year-old has scored nine top-flight goals in 41 appearances, while being a key focal point and asset who has performed in wider or withdrawn roles.

League One Sunderland, according to Scottish Sun, are keen to land the player this month and have opened talks.

Former Hearts and Kilmarnock midfielder Lee Johnson, who is in charge at the Stadium of Light, has spoken previously of his desire to bring in a striker but noted that it would most likely be a loan deal.

Ross County boss John Hughes said earlier this month that the club were resigned to losing him at the end of the season but it would take an offer of at least £500,000 to secure his services in January.

“I have a real feeling coming from him that he wants to be part of keeping this club in the Premiership," he said.

“I think it would be his way of thanking the club for everything they have done for him over the last few years. He is very grateful for the stage the club has given him.

“He seems quite happy to be here the rest of the season, as would we be. But if a club comes in with a bid of £500,000 then we have a decision to make.”
