Leith Athletic veteran may be tempted to keep the gloves

Gordon, who turns 36 this summer, has been a mainstay of the side since joining Derek Riddel’s men 11 years ago and is again proving his worth along with back-up keeper Neil Fairnie having conceded just eight goals between them so far this term.

The veteran admitted he was set to call time on his playing days having helped guide Leith to their first league title last season only to have a change of heart at the last minute.

And, with the Capital side knocking Heriot-Watt University off of top spot courtesy of Saturday’s 2-0 win at home to Stirling University, Gordon says he will reassess his options in a couple of months’ time.

“I was all set on retiring last season but because we won the league I felt that I needed to keep playing,” Gordon explained. “I’m really enjoying myself so we’ll see where we stand come the end of this campaign. Hopefully we’ll have another league title in the bag.

“Things are going really well and it’s great we’re back on top again. As long as we keep winning then that’s all that matters.”

Leith have completed all ten home fixtures at Meadowbank 3G and now start the first of seven away matches this weekend with the short trip to Heriot-Watt.

“There’s nothing worse than getting that message on a Saturday morning to say that the game’s been called off,” he said. “Look at Saturday there for example, with all the other games being off we had the chance to return to the top of the league by putting the points on the board.

“We’ve got some real tricky away fixtures to come, though. We are at Heriot-Watt this weekend so that’s a massive game for us before we go to Tynecastle and Lothian Thistle as well as the Borders teams.”

Lothian host SPFL League Two outfit Berwick Rangers in the semi-final of the East of Scotland Cup at Saughton tomorrow night.
