Lennon believes League Cup is best chance for Buddies

St MIRREN manager Danny Lennon feels the Scottish Communities League Cup is his team’s best opportunity of silverware this season after they booked a quarter-final spot.

The Buddies were comfortable 2-0 winners over St Johnstone in Perth after an excellent first-half display yielded an own goal from Jamie Adams and captain Jim Goodwin’s sweet angled drive – his first goal for the club.

St Mirren were beaten finalists against Rangers in the 2010 final and Lennon’s outfit could yet return to Hampden if they can maintain the form they showed at McDiarmid Park.

Having ended St Johnstone’s five-game unbeaten run, Lennon said: “We were delighted with the win.

“I thought our entries into their final third were excellent, we always looked a threat going forward.

“We’re delighted in the progress we have made, but we’ve a long, long way to go.

“It keeps things alive for us now, different from the hustle and bustle of the league on a weekly basis.

“It’s nice to still be in the cup and I always think if you’re looking to win a cup, for clubs our size this is probably the best opportunity.

“We’ll see what the next round brings.”
