The Lions boss is delighted with the overall make-up of his squad but still plans to make one more signing.

"I'm still looking for probably one more to come into the building but I'm fairly happy with where we are as a collective unit," he said. "I'm looking to bring an offensive player in."

Asked if an arrival was imminent, Martindale said: "Nearly. But until it's signed, you're still a million miles away. We're talking to a couple of clubs and players and we'll hopefully get something done before the window shuts.

"I've got a Plan B though. If we miss out before the window shuts, there are a couple of out-of-contract players I've got my eye on that we can potentially sign after the window.

“If the window shut tomorrow though, I'd be quite happy with where we are. I think we've got more than enough to be competitive in the league this year."

Martindale is delighted that Cristian Montano didn’t elect to leave the club in the summer. The Colombian endured a challenging first season in Scotland and Martindale would have allowed the 30-year-old former Port Vale and Bristol Rovers player to leave.

But the rejuvenated full-back has been in impressive form this campaign and capped it off with a 25-yard match winner against Dundee United at Tannadice on Sunday.

Martindale added: “Cristian was one of the guys who if they chapped my door in the summer, I’d have said if you want to go back down the road I won’t stand in your way.

“I don’t think he hit the heights I needed him to last year but from day one of pre-season this year I’ve been super impressed.

“I spoke to him at the end of the season. I said to him: ‘I don’t want you to leave the football club because you’re a great guy in and around the place but I need more from you on the park’.

“He came back and he’s been brilliant. I’m actually really, really happy for him. I’ve got a lot of time for Cristian and his family.”
