South Challenge Cup: Edinburgh Uni 0, Cumbernauld Colts 4

Edinburgh Uni crashed out of the South Region Challenge Cup at the fourth-round stage after a 4-0 defeat at home to Cumbernauld. Sean Brown put the Colts ahead early on and an own goal by Max Verkaik meant the Students had a mountain to climb at the break. Brown went on to complete his hat-trick with two goals in the second period to cap off a bad day for the hosts.

Edinburgh University: Tait, Murray, McIntosh, Smith, Verkaik, Daniels-Yeoman, Nikolaidis (Collins 45), Ritchie (Irving 63), Guthrie, McCrory-Irving (Maskrey 63), Calbacho. Unused subs: Evans, Scott, Davison.

Lowland League: Civil Service Strollers 2, Vale of Leithen 4

Strollers started the game well and took the lead through Stephen Froude, but Vale went in ahead at the break thanks to goals from Blair Atkinson and Jay Stevens. The same duo were on the scoresheet in the second half as Vale confirmed victory and although David Churchill pulled one back for Civil, they had Froude sent off – somewhat harshly – to compound a bad day at the office.

Civil Service: Burnside, Newall, Laird, Turnbull, Dingwall, Clapperton, Stewart, Downie, Churchill, Froude, J Boyle. Subs: A Boyle, Stenhouse, Milven, Brown, Campbell.

Lowland League: Hawick RA 0, Spartans 4

Spartans ran out 4-0 winners at Albert Park, with Jack Beesley netting a double in the Hawick quagmire. It took until the 33rd minute before the deadlock was broken, with Scott Maxwell setting up Alan Brown to open the scoring. Ross Allum doubled the visitors’ advantage and Beesley scored the best of the batch with a sensational solo effort before the break. Beesley then slotted home from the penalty spot.

Hawick RA: Jack, Stevenson, Spence, Jacobs, Campbell (McPartlin), Johnson, Bernawi, Conaghan Morris, Hunter, McKenzie. Unused subs: McInally, Rankin.

Spartans: Carswell, Herd, Stevenson, Tolmie, Thomson, Mair, Beesley (Dishington), Greenhill, Allum (Murray), Maxwell, Brown (Gabiola). Unused subs: Saunderson, Comrie.

Lowland League: Preston Athletic 1, Gretna 2008 2

The Panners were deservedly ahead at the break thanks to Jason Young’s goal, but Gretna levelled just at the start of the second half through Ellis Pearson. The away side then struck again moments later when Scott Norman lobbed Craig Pennycuick.
