MAROON MEMORIES: Robbo beats Wardhaugh's scoring record

In a game that struggled for action for the majority of the match, it was to become clear that Hearts were determined to finish the season with a bang.

Hearts’ final game of the season proved an occasion to remember for 18-year-old Derek Holmes, who became the latest youngster to be given a taste of first-team football by manager Jefferies.

He was drafted in to partner John Robertson who received special presentations from Jambos’ chairman Leslie Deans, Rangers boss Walter Smith and his father-in-law, Bill Young, before the game to mark his feat in equalling Jimmy Wardhaugh’s league goals record of 206 in the previous home game against Dunfermline.

Hearts, who were already secure in fourth place, were facing newly-crowned champions Rangers, with new signing, French striker Stephane Adam, paraded before the fans during the half-time interval.

Walter Smith’s side included England legend Paul Gascoigne, who was partnered in midfield by teenager Barry  Ferguson.

Seeking revenge from the two thrashings handed out by Rangers earlier in the season, including a 4-1 defeat at Tynecastle, as well as revenge for the 4-3 defeat in the League Cup Final, the onus was on Hearts to make something out of what was otherwise a dead rubber.

The game burst into life in the final ten minutes, sparked by Hearts taking the lead in the 80th minute.

Neil Pointon raced into the box on the left before cutting the ball back to Colin Cameron, who sent a superb left-foot shot high into the net.

The advantage was wiped out just two minutes later by substitute Charlie Miller who had just come on for Van Vossen. He poked the ball home after a mix-up between McKenzie and Dave McPherson.

Robertson brought down the curtain on Hearts’ season in fairytale fashion, claiming the Tynecastle side’s league scoring record with a glorious late  double, and in the process grabbing centre stage in dramatic fashion.

He made no mistake with an 84th-minute penalty after being fouled inside the box by Gordan Petric.

And then, as the Hearts fans were still celebrating that glorious goal, provided an exquisite finish two minutes later to claim goal No.208, brilliantly picking his spot past keeper Andy Dibble after cutting the ball back on to his left foot near the penalty spot.

The little striker was mobbed by fans who ran on to the pitch at the final whistle.
