Former Musselburgh Athletic boss McLeish was appointed swiftly having only been interviewed for the post on Thursday night.

He led his Burgh team for the last time last night as they were knocked out to Linlithgow Rose in the quarter-finals of the Fife and Lothians Cup on penalties at Prestonfield. He will begin his reign at New Victoria Park on Monday.

Ruari MacLennan gave Rose a first-half lead after 17 minutes but David McGlynn’s men were pegged back at the start of the second half after a stunning Ryan Cameron strike.

The tie went straight to penalties and Rose were 5-4 victors to set up a semi-final clash at home to Super League champions Bonnyrigg Rose on Wednesday night.

McLeish’s new side went down 2-1 at home to Penicuik Athletic in their final match of the season.

Keith Lough gave Penicuik the lead in the second half after a goalless opening period with a deflected free-kick.

Star looked to have salvaged a point with a Kris Renton penalty but Craig Meikle’s men secured all three points two minutes from time when Ryan Gay curled home from the edge of the box.

Bo’ness United scraped through to the semi-finals of the East of Scotland Cup after a 1-0 success away to Premier League Dalkeith Thistle.

There was little in the way of goalmouth action in a drab first period, although Bo’ness enjoyed the majority of possession despite creating little chances.

The second half was an improvement and after home goalkeeper Dawid Paterek kept his side in it with a number of fine saves, Bo’ness finally broke the deadlock 15 minutes from time when Chris Donnelly’s strike took a wicked defection on route to goal.

The Newtown Park men will host Forfar West End in the last four.
