Newtongrange Star back on track, says boss Miller

Newtongrange manager Alan Miller believes his team are looking like their '˜old selves' again following a 2-1 win at Musselburgh.

After seeing Kris Renton drive home the winner with ten minutes remaining, Miller said: “That’s two in a row now and we are looking like our old selves again.

“We’ve played like that in a lot of games without getting anything so to come away from Musselburgh with three points, I’ll take that any day.”

The visitors started well but it took a real special goal to open up the Musselburgh defence. In the third minute, the ball was headed clear only as far as former Hearts defender Craig Thomson, who steadied himself before rifling a 25-yard effort that sailed high into the roof of the net.

The hosts came out more determined after the break and, within five minutes, had an equaliser. Sean Jamieson had an effort blocked but it fell to Jed Davie whose snap-shot
exploded into the net despite the efforts of goalkeeper Kieron Renton.

Both goalkeepers were in fine form to keep the game level until Renton grabbed a dramatic winner. Gary Cherrie and substitute Jordan Cropley combined well to put Kris Renton clear on goal and, from 20 yards, his low drive nestled into the bottom corner.

Musselburgh manager Steve McLeish praiseed his ream despite the defeat. He said: “I thought we deserved something from the game because we showed a lot of character out there.”
