Rangers give youth a chance

Rangers assistant manager Kenny McDowall hopes tonight’s friendly against Hamburg will provide vital experience for their younger players in the absence of European football this season.

The Light Blues crashed out of both the Champions League and the Europa League at the qualifying stages earlier in the campaign, meaning more free midweeks than they had hoped for.

Rangers now make the trip to Germany for a match that looks set to provide action for those on the fringes of the first team.

McDowall said: “It’s a good opportunity for us to get some of the guys a game who have not been getting match-time. We’ve not got Europe so it’s a good calibre of game and great experience for the younger ones. It’s just a break from the domestic games.

“We will be taking a younger squad, along with the first-team boys, and hopefully we can get them on and get them some European experience.”
