Muirhead, who was joined in the starting line-up by Viktor Noring, Alim Ozturk, Krystian Nowak and Juwon Oshaniwa, slotted home in the 37th minute after being sent through on Well goalkeeper Jordan Pettigrew.

Hearts keeper Noring had come to his side’s rescue in the eighth minute, pushing away Dylan Mackin’s penalty – awarded after an infringement at a corner kick.

Oshaniwa had an early effort saved by Pettigrew, who produced another excellent save to push a curling shot from Muirhead onto the post just 60 seconds after the striker had given Hearts the lead.

In the second half, Noring used his feet to stop a shot by Motherwell’s Mackin while Hearts defender Nowak sent an ambitious 40-yard volley just over the bar.

Hearts: Noring, Jones, Reid, Nowak, Ozturk, Vladislav, Morrison, Gillen, Currie, Muirhead, Oshaniwa.
