Smiles from South Gyle as they shock high-flying Fernieside

South Gyle, who play in the lower-tier Edinburgh West 
Division, now have a home tie against Mayfield & Easthouses or Heriot Vale in the fourth round.

After a stuffy opening, 
Fernieside gained the upper hand after 60 minutes when Darren Deery fired into the 
bottom left corner from inside the penalty box.

However, this lead was short-lived as the visitors equalised after capitalising on some poor defending in the home side’s rearguard as Craig Finnie turned the ball in from close range after a long throw-in.

As Fernieside went in search of the winner, they were dealt a sucker punch when South Gyle counter-attacked and Ryan Weir coolly lobbed the ball into the back of the net for the 
winning goal.

was complimentary to his 
players in what was a terrific hard-working performance.

Taylor said: “We played out of our skins and probably the best we have played. They perhaps had an off-day, but we’ll take a lot of confidence from this. We have got a decent side ourselves, so we’re just taking it one game at a time.”

Fernieside’s Brian Anderson said: “South Gyle played well but we were below par and were outfought in some 
areas. Our main aim is to win the league, but we would have liked a decent cup run too.”

Five-star Dalkeith

Dalkeith MW toppled Balerno Athletic 5-0 in their third round Logan Cup tie at Iron Mills and will now face 
divisional opponents Spartans in the fourth round.

The visitors were unable to thwart Dalkeith’s supremacy in the final third.

Lawrie Flynn put the home side ahead when his clever run from the right was rewarded as he tapped in after a cross from the left. Craig Brown then curled a magnificent free kick from 25 yards over the Balerno wall and into the top corner to put Dalkeith two up.

Chris Wright made it three after the interval when he struck a half volley into the bottom corner. Three soon became four when Lee Smith showed great accuracy as his strike found the far corner from 20 yards.

The rout was soon completed when Brown got his second of the match with a header at the near post to make it 5-0.

Dalkeith’s John Taylor said: “If we can keep our squad fit and free of suspensions then I think we can get to the final. We won the League Cup and the Miller Cup last year, so we’d like to win something.”

Watt drop worries?

Watt Star produced a terrific display to ease their relegation fears with a 3-0 victory over Scottish Widows at Kirkbrae.

Star are now two points better off than bottom-placed Musselburgh United in Lothian East, while Widows remain in fourth place.

The visitors went in front courtesy of Paul McAnulty’s header after a corner from the right, before Steven Morton’s finish from the outside of his right foot found the bottom left corner to make it 2-0 after a neat one-two with McAnulty.

McAnulty was once again the architect as his pass across the six yard box was turned in by Liam Gormley for the third goal.

Star’s goalkeeper Duncan 
Logan then produced a fantastic double save to maintain a well deserved clean sheet for his side.

Star coach Davie Fulton said: “I’m very pleased in what was a good performance from the guys.

“There were no failures at all in our squad, but Duncan has been absolute brilliant for us all season and has played out of his skin.”
