Students and Whitehill aim to lift themselves up Lowland League

Edinburgh University and Whitehill Welfare have the opportunity to move themselves back in to the top half of the Ferrari Packaging Lowland League when they meet at East Peffermill tonight.

The sides sit eighth and ninth in the league respectively, each having put 27 points on the board, although Welfare do have the luxury of five games in hand over their opponents, having played 17 to Uni’s 22.

The weather handed the Ferguson Park club some respite from what is a gruelling fixture schedule at the weekend, with their South Challenge Cup third round tie against Ormiston failing a 9.30am pitch inspection. That may have been a blessing in disguise for Grant Carnie’s men, who played out two successive 1-1 draws with Selkirk and a ten-man Preston Athletic respectively in the preceding seven days, both on heavy pitches.

The Students also had a free week given their exit from the South Challenge Cup in the third round at the hands of Edinburgh City. Uni Head Coach Dorian Ogunro will be seeking a response from his side however, after East Kilbride netted six without reply in their last league fixture at K Park.
