Tranent avoid paying penalty for keeper's failed '˜Panenka'

Despite blowing a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at King’s Park, the visitors held their nerve, winning a penalty shoot-out 4-3.

“It was hard for all the players out there but we stuck to our task and got the result we wanted,” said Smith. “Now we’re in the quarter-finals of the cup and that’s something to be proud of.”

Tranent had raced into the lead after only 35 seconds when Kane Paterson scored from close range. They doubled their advantage on the 20-minute mark with a strike from Kenny Fisher.

Dalkeith pulled a goal back before the break in spectacular style. Striker Stewart Adams, playing against his brother Ally Adams in the Tranent goal, bicycle-kicked a cross from Paul Tansey into the net in fabulous fashion.

Dalkeith now had the wind behind them but couldn’t find the equaliser they were looking for until the last minute of the match.

Tranent failed to clear a corner from the right and Blake Wales headed home at the second attempt. Tranent by now had Jamie Paterson sent off for a second booking.

Into the penalty shoot-out and Dalkeith were drawn first with Stewart Adams lining up to take the opening kick against his brother Ally in the Tranent goal and sending his effort wide.

Then, up stepped Ally to have Tranent’s first go, trying a ‘Panenka’ which James McQueen in the Dalkeith goal read easily and saved. The sticky pitch was hardly conducive to such an effort and his ‘dinked’ attempt enraged his manager and fellow players.

All other takers were successful, until John Robertson missed for Dalkeith allowing Kenny Fisher to seal the visitors’ victory.

Dalkeith boss Kevin Haynes praised his side’s efforts, saying: “It was hard out there and, apart from that opening twenty minutes, we competed well.

“The boys showed great character to come back from two down but, in the end, it was that missed penalty which made the difference.”
