Whitehill leave it late to secure points in opener

Whitehill WELFARE kicked off their East of Scotland Seniors Central Taxis Premier Division campaign with a 1-0 victory over Edinburgh University at Peffermill last night.

Whitehill manager Rab Paget said: “I think Uni defended very well tonight and I thought it was going to be one of those nights.

“Mark Tait pulled of several fantastic saves, but we stayed patient and we kept our shape and continued to press them for the entire 90 minutes. We had the lion’s share of possession and I am delighted that we have started with a good victory.”

Whitehill had several chances in the first half, but Tait pulled off some fantastic saves to keep the score level.

But in the 87th minute, Kevin Moffat scored after Uni failed to clear their lines properly. The ball was crossed to the back post where Moffat smashed it into the net leaving Tait with no chance.

Uni manager Douglas Samuels said: “I thought our team was magnificent tonight, taking into consideration the amount of injuries and players missing.”

Elsewhere, Craigroyston and Ormiston – both clubs with ambitions of promotion this season – shared the points in a 1-1 draw, although Ormiston were aggrieved at Craigroyston’s equalising goal. Richard Fairnie had given Ormiston the lead which they looked like holding on to until, with time running out, Steven Finlayson equalised.

However, the Ormiston players felt that a throw-in should have been returned to them after they had kicked the ball out because of an injury.

In the Premier Division, Edinburgh City suffered a 4-2 home defeat from the students of Stirling University, while Gretna 2008, last season’s First Division champions, beat Lothian Thistle 3-2 at Saughton Enclosure with goals from Phil Storey, David Renyard and Chris Inglis.

In the Borders, Premier side Vale of Leithen beat Selkirk 4-0, while, in the First Division, Gala Fairydean defeated Coldstream 2-1, and Kelso United drew 2-2 with Hawick Royal Albert.
