Youths: Longniddry Villa 16s battle back against City Whites

It took until the 20th minute for the first real chance. Villa’s Jack Branley picked the ball up just outside the City box and he sent a driven effort just wide of goalkeeper Luca Scarpa’s goal.

That immediately sparked City into life and they went ahead two minutes later. Fraser Blackie drilled the ball into the box from the right and Callum Simpson tucked it away.

It could have been two for City before the end of the half. Blackie’s long-range strike was palmed away by Villa goalie Cameron Sandilands but Struan Maclean smashed the rebound over.

Villa had a few chances as the half wore on, but couldn’t create anything clear-cut.

Eventually, midway through the second half, Villa scored. Kieron Douglas’ free-kick on the left was headed in by Alex Williamson at the back post.

Both sides pushed for a winner but the game finished all square.

• Seven up for Redhall Star 17s

Redhall Star 17s got off to a flying start in Division 2 as they beat Whitehill Welfare 7-0 at Redhall Park.

Redhall started strongly, racking up three goals in the opening 20 minutes.

Daniel Glen sent a pinpoint through ball down the middle for Tommy Hendry to race onto and he put Redhall ahead nine minutes in.

After Nathan Robertson had doubled the home side’s lead shortly after, he seized upon a loose clearance at the heart of the Whitehill defence to steer the ball in from a tight angle for No.3.

Hendry made it 4-0 to his side before the interval and, after the break, Redhall continued to show no mercy in front of goal. Josh Slow-Clayton scored the goal of the game with a superb 25-yard strike.

Into the final 15 minutes, and Redhall were hungry for more. After Adam Shortiss banged in another, Joe Turner made it a sensational seventh of the game as he fired in Hendry’s assist from close range.

• AC Oxgangs 17s too hot for Currie

AC Oxgangs 17s picked up three points with a 3-1 win away to Currie Star 17s.

Oxgangs came flying out of the traps at Malleny Park to take an early lead. A bouncing ball in the Currie penalty box was thundered in by Cameron Milne with a crisp half-volley.

Currie didn’t waste time making inroads into the Oxgangs half and levelled after probing away. Adam Cairnie’s corner was met with a majestic header from Ben Wilson to make it 1-1.

It had been a competitive first half and that theme continued into the second period.

But it was the visitors, who went back ahead. Connor Griffin produced an accurate pass that cut through Currie, allowing Milne to bury the ball from close range.

Currie played some good football but just couldn’t find the back of the net.

They were made to pay late on as Oxgangs upped their efforts to wrap up the victory. Finlay Giles-Dook went on a mazy run down the right-hand side before cutting into the Currie box to slam the ball home.

Oxgangs held on for a win which will give them a lot of encouraging for the season ahead considering they suffered defeat to their opponents in pre-season.
