Youths: St Bernard's 13s to contest Edinburgh Cup final

On a windy morning at Peffermill, it took until the 20th minute for the first shot on target as both sides kept it tight at the back. Edina’s Liam McLeod looked to test goalie Finnie Crawford as he cut in from the left to shoot from range but his effort was straight at the Saints stopper.

Sadly for Crawford, his game was soon over when he and Edina’s Jack Garrad collided in the box, leaving the goalkeeper unable to continue.

Craig Knight took the gloves and was made to work, but not before Saints grabbed two quick goals before half-time. Dylan Peacock burst into the box following a quick break from his side and he shrugged off his marker to smash home from close range. Then, 90 seconds later, Brendan McHale beat the Edina offside trap to steer the ball in one-on-one with Alistair Corbet.

Edina increased their effort after the interval and pulled one back midway through the half. Garrad got in behind to send the ball home after initially being denied by Knight.

The momentum was with Edina late on and Ford Moffat thought he had taken the game to extra time with a goal in the final minute only for it to be chalked off for offside. With that the game was over and Saints had held on to win 2-1 and make the final.

Loanhead 19s one step from cup glory

Loanhead MYFC 19s defeated Dalkeith Thistle 3-0 at Lasswade High School to secure a place in the final of the South East Region Cup.

After a fairly even first half in which neither side created any clear-cut chances, Loanhead came out after the break looking determined to get a result.

Not long after the restart, they took the lead when, following good build-up in midfield, Sam Jones slipped in Calum Smart before he was taken out in the box. The referee didn’t hesitate in awarding a penalty which Darren McCraw tucked away.

One goal soon became two for Loanhead, who had all the momentum. Smart was played down the right and he hit a first-time pass for Jones to score from just inside the box.

It was all one-way traffic with Loanhead on top and things then got even better as they found a third late on. Jones played in a corner from the right and Ross Currie met the ball with a volley to make it 3-0 and cement Loanhead’s place in the final. They go on to face either Broxburn Athletic Colts 19s or Leith Athletic 19s.

Hutchie 17s into the last four

Hutchie Vale 17s edged out Musselburgh Windsor with 3-1 win to put themselves into the Tom Wilson Memorial Cup semi-finals.

In what was a closely-contested game at Meggetland, Hutchie broke the deadlock with 25 minutes on the clock.

A corner from the right was headed back across goal by Bruce McCrorie for Callum Mackie to nod in.

Hutchie had edged the opening 45 but, after the break, Mussie came out looking lively.

Despite their best efforts, they could not make their good football count and the momentum then swung back to the hosts. Hutchie added a second when a partially-cleared cross fell to Murray Rose and from 30 yards he sent a stinging volley into the goal to double his side’s advantage.

It was all Hutchie now and they added a third shortly after when Rose struck from close range.

As the game wore on, Evan McGuire hit the post for Hutchie and immediately Mussie broke to pull a goal back.

Sean Brown’s initial effort was palmed away by goal keeper Fraser Britton and Ross Greig followed up the rebound to half-volley in a  consolation.
