Edinburgh's Gina Aitken narrowly missed out on a famous victory over former world champion Eve Muirhead at the Scottish Curling Championships in Perth yesterday, but her Murrayfield clubmate Bruce Mouat chalked up another impressive round-robin win.

Aitken posed a serious threat to Muirhead’s four-game unbeaten run as she led 6-1 early on and was still 7-5 up going to the final end, but Muirhead dug deep and counted three stones to win 8-7.

Gina remains in contention for a spot in the medal play-offs, but her younger sister Karina looks doomed after losing 9-6 to Stirling’s Katie Murray, her fourth defeat in five games.

Mouat trounced local player Moray Combe 10-1 after racing into a 7-0 lead as he improved his record to five wins out of seven.
