Golf: Early shock heats winter league

CASTLE PARK claimed a notable scalp as they beat Dunbar, the 11-times champions but relegated last season, in the East Lothian Winter Golf League.

Brian Thomson’s team have never been out of the bottom two in the four years since joining the competition but they served up an early shock in this season’s Second Division campaign.

Danny Beatson and Ian Sellwood clinched a 3-2 win as they beat Dunbar duo Brian Martin and George Black by 2 and 1 in the decisive match. Other winners in the second flight were Royal Musselburgh, Musselburgh Old and Craigielaw, the latter bouncing back from a defeat by Dunbar the previous week to record a home victory over Gifford.

In the First Division, Gullane had to dig deep to make home advantage count against newly-promoted Musselburgh. All five matches went the full distance, with Gullane coming out on top 3.5-1.5 in the end.
