Golf: Liberton and Prestonfield bid for title

IT’S all to play for as the South East Edinburgh Winter League draws to a conclusion this weekend, with Liberton and Prestonfield vying for the title.

Leaders Prestonfield end their campaign at Duddingston on Sunday, when Liberton are also away to Craigmillar Park.

If Prestonfield win, then they’ll be champions. But any sort of slip up could open the door for Liberton, who have a better “goal” difference.

The latest round of matches produced two away wins – Prestonfield coming out on top 2½-1½ at Craigmillar Park while Duddingston triumphed by the same score at Liberton.

The latter was somewhat controversial as the Duddingston team included a player who had represented Craigmillar Park earlier in the campaign.

“As the player is now a full member at Duddingston, I have decided that the result will stand,” said league secretary Robert Bald.

“I can only suggest that one of the member clubs makes representation at the next AGM to present a motion to ensure that this situation will not happen again. That would mean any player who represents any club during any Winter League campaign is effectively ‘cup-tied’ and is unable to play for another club in the same season.”
