Golf: Longniddry target good winter run

LONGNIDDRY laid down an early marker after beating defending champions Glen in their opening game in this season’s East Lothian Winter League.

Admittedly, they were making the most of home advantage but, nevertheless, Longniddry will take confidence from a 4…-… success.

A strong top pairing of Myles Cunningham and Chris Wood set the tone as they came out on top against Jim Jack and Colin Rowley on the home green.

And it required a battling performance from Barry Ford and Chris Timms to avoid the title holders starting out this time around with a whitewash.

The two other First Division fixtures both produced away wins. Haddington came out on top at newcomers Musselburgh, while Tantallon edged a close encounter at Gullane.

In the Second Division, Musselburgh Old sprung a surprise at Kilspindie and have already accumulated as many points as they did last season.

Craigielaw had little difficulty taking the points from their visit to Thorntree, league leaders Royal Musselburgh safely negotiated a tricky match at Whitekirk, and Gifford won at home against Castle Park.
