Golf: Lothians trio hit heights at Northern

A TRIO of Lothians golfers were to the fore after the opening day of the £25,000 Aberdeen Asset Management Northern Open at Meldrum House.

Two Edinburgh-based players, Gareth Wright and Alan Reid, were out in front after they signed for five-under-par 65s, with another Capital star, Mark Kerr, sitting in a group just a shot behind.

Wright, 29, who is attached to West Linton, was always going well and soared to the top of the leaderboard on the back of an eagle-3 at the 17th, where he holed from 25 feet.

Reid, a former Scottish Boys’ champion, is the club professional at West Lothian and hasn’t played much competitive golf this year. But he certainly likes this course – it was the second round running he’d signed for a 65 on it.

Kerr, a former Dispatch Trophy winner, had 28 putts in his 66, holing from 30 feet down the slope for a 2 at the last.

On a good opening day for Lothians players, Dunbar duo Neil Fenwick and Danny Kay signed for 67 and 69 respectively.

Amateur ace Kay was “a bit disappointed” with his effort after he’d started with three straight birdies.
