Golf: Matthew putt in her place by daughter Katie

According to mum, the youngster already thinks she knows better when it comes to the Royal & Ancient game.

“She reckons she doesn’t need any lessons – she thinks she knows it all,” said Matthew of her offspring.

Katie watched mum when she won the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open at Archerfield Links by ten shots last year. She was hoping to be back at the East Lothian venue today for the last round of the same event – but it wasn’t necessarily to cheer on her mum again.

“She’s heard one of her friends has been here already this week, so she is desperate to come,” added Matthew, who faced a last-day fight to hang on to her title. On two-over after 36 holes, the North Berwick woman and host club member trailed the leaders by five shots.

“I didn’t drive the ball well today,” said Matthew after a level-par 72 in her second round.

On Thursday, it had been her putter that had misbehaved. “Maybe everything will come together in the last round,” she said with a smile. “It will have to as I’m probably going to need a nice seven-under to have a chance.”

Among the players she was chasing was Carly Booth, who shot a 71 in her fellow Scot’s company, to earn a share of the lead with England’s Florentyna Parker and South African Stacy Lee Bregman.

“It’s a long time since I played with Carly – in fact, it was probably back when she was still an amateur,” said Matthew. “But she played well.”

Musselburgh’s Vikki Laing matched Matthew’s second-day 72 to safely make the cut on four-over.
